WBC of NYS Celebrates their Sustainability Funding
It seems like yesterday, but it was July 2001 when the Women’s Business Center of NYS became the first center of its kind in Upstate New York. On September 28, 2006, the Center was awarded its 5 Year Sustainability Funding. The WBC of NYS was one of 13 Women’s Business Centers to receive this funding.
On Monday, October 16, 2006, over seventy-five women participated in the Celebration of Their Sustainability Funding Award and the opening of National Business Women’s Week. Several local dignitaries presented the Center with Proclamations claiming October 15-21, 2006 as National Business Women’s Week. William Manger, Jr., Regional Administrator of the US SBA’s Region II was the guest speaker. He spoke of the SBA Resource Partners and the many fine accomplishments of the WBC of NYS. He conveyed that the WBC of NYS in their first five years has assisted in opening over 145 businesses, creating 280 jobs; and they counseled and trained over 4900 women in 30 counties of Central New York.
Three of the Center’s successful Women Entrepreneurs, Ondrea Grippe-Getz of Center Stage Dance Studio; Julieann Moyer of The Title Place; and Joanne Zennamo of Genesis Disposables, LLC were presented with awards as WBC’s Successful Women Entrepreneurs of 2006. Our fourth award receipt, Colleen Pardi of the Medicine Shoppe, was unable to attend because of illness.

“Look like a diva at a price you will love!” This is the motto at Ondrea’s Diva Boutique. Ondrea Grippe is a young entrepreneur who has grown up around entrepreneurs. Following in her mother’s footsteps, Ondrea is an accomplished hair stylist and dancer. She runs her own home-based beauty salon in North Utica. This year she decided to expand her business to include Ondrea’s Diva Boutique. Her boutique brings unique and one-of-a-kind accessories from the big city reasonably priced to her customers. Her product line includes purses, handbags, jewelry, hats, wedding and prom accessories. The boutique is opened during the day and in the evening for her customers’ convenience. Also private parties are being offered at the client’s homes or at the boutique.
Ondrea’s mother, Donna Grippe, New Hartford BOCES’s Cosmetology instructor, has a long standing working relationship with the Women’s Business Center of NYS and she advised her daughter to get into the center for assistance with her new business venture. After only a couple of consultations, Ondrea had her business plan completed and her first personal federal credit loan of $25,000 to get her up and started.
With her grand opening just before the start of the holiday season, Ondrea was a great success. She had to make an immediate buying trip to New York City to replenish her inventory due to the success of her opening.
Ondrea has continued to be successful and because of her interest in dance and many years being a dance instructor she decided to open her own dance studio. She contacted the Women’s Busiess Center of NYS and the center helped her prepare yet another business plan for her new dance studio. Center Stage Dance Studio opened on September 10, 2006 in Marcy, New York. She offers dance classes to the young and young at heart. There are a variety of classes from Mommy and Me, Wedding Day Dance and Old Time Rock-n-Roll. She features jazz, tap, ballet, hip-hop, modern and ballroom.

“Dr. Laino has been instrumental in helping us develop our Business Action Plan. She helped us obtain a low interest loan for a woman-owned business as well as qualify for the benefits of EDZ (Economic Development Zone) status. In our second year we will attain sales of almost two million dollars - well ahead of projections. Dr. Laino-s guidance in our start-up has been most appreciated."

In 2002, Ms. Zennamo founded Genesis Disposables, LLC a manufacturer of disposable medical caps, gowns, and other related surgical products sold across the country through medical and hospital supply distributors. As majority owner, President, and CEO, Joanne Zennamo takes an active role in overseeing the business, which came about from a smaller company’s reorganization that she financed through $100,000 in personal assets and funding from family members.
When Joanne decided to expand her Frankfort-based medical supply business earlier this year, she turned to Women’s Business Center of New York State to guide her through the process to get certified as a woman-owned business enterprise (WBE). Her contact with the WBC staff in Utica not only helped expedite the certification process, but also provided valuable technical assistance needed to obtain a loan to grow her flourishing business.
According to Ms. Zennamo, “The staff of the WBC was an absolutely invaluable resource to my business in setting the wheels in motion to expedite my WBE application. The one-on-one consultations and the knowledge I gained from completing the Small Business Training Program enabled me to finalize my business action plan. Upon presenting it to HSBC Bank, I was able to secure a loan of $18,000 toward a larger $400,000 loan needed for expansion purposes.”
Joanne won the Women’s Business Center of NYS/Mohawk Valley Business Women’s Network Business Plan Award for 2005. She received $500 for having the best business plan prepared while taking the WBC Small Business Training Program.
The Title Place
Julieann Moyer, Owner/Director
8568 Camroden Road
Holland Patent, NY 13354-3402
Julie started The Title Place in September, 2004 but she was having trouble getting clients. She contacted the Women’s Business Center of NYS in November 2005 and enrolled in the Small Business Training Program. Julie started her business plan and worked very hard during all the classes. Upon graduating from the program in February 2006, she submitted her completed business plan to the Partner’s Trust Bank Business Plan Award Contest and won first place, which was a $200 cash award.
With the skills she learned in the program, she began her marketing strategy. She designed and developed several brochures for the general public and car dealers. Developed a radio commercial and began running 60 radio spots on WFRG 104.3, a local radio station.
The Title Place services include all your DMV needs. The convenience of using the Title Place is you don’t have to leave work and go to the DMV, they handle it all from start to finish. In addition to DMV services, Julie also holds Defensive Driving Classes every other month, to help drivers reduce their points on their driving records or get a 10% discount on their car insurance.
Julie has been featured on the front page of the August 26th edition of the Mohawk Valley Business Journal. Julie credits her recent business awareness and success to the WBC and the Small Business Training Progam. “With the knowledge and skills I acquired from Dr. Pat and Donna, I was able to give me business the boost that it needed to get more clients and start making money. I would never have been able to do this without the expertise given me by the Women’s Business Center.”
